MARQUETTE, Mich. -Alan "Al" Delbert Parker, 55, of 1536 W. Ridge St., Marquette died at Marquette General Hospital November 9, 2012 after a life long struggle with Fabry's Disease, which afflicted two of Al's brothers who preceded him in death. Al received the gift of life 22 years ago when his sister, Bonnie, selflessly donated a kidney to him. Words cannot express how grateful Al was for this extraordinary gift and for all the support provided by his family. Spending holidays with family were some of Al's fondest memories, especially Independence Day. Al always had a lighter ready to participate in the annual Parker fireworks show.
Al passed on his love for fishing and appreciation for nature and all of its beauty to his son, Richard. That love has now been passed on to the apple of Al's eye, his grandson, Rece who recently caught a 24-inch salmon! Al was so thrilled to be able to share in Rece's excitement at such a catch. Al felt blessed to have been able to watch Rece grow and play super hero games, and for the chance to make special memories with him.
Al was born to Dorothy (Bancroft) and Leonard E. Parker in Marquette on March 31, 1957. He was a 1976 graduate of Marquette Senior High School. After graduation, Al was employed by CCI-Tilden Mine for eight years. Following a lengthy strike at CCI, Al was hired by Shopko where he worked for 28 years until his death.
On September 10, 1978, Al married Margaret Turner. Al and Margaret have one son, Richard (Krystal Koskey) and one grandchild, Rece Parker. Al is also survived by his father Leonard E. Parker, Marquette; sister Bonnie (John) Longhi of Green Bay, WI; brother Leonard R. (Julie) Parker, Marquette; sister-in-law Cindy (Jimmy, deceased) Parker, Marquette; and sister Peggy (Phil) Mickelson, Fort Worth, TX . Al is also survived by his mother-in-law, Carol Hill and brother-in-law, Mark Hill (Jackie Levanetz). Al is also survived by nieces Misiel (Chuck) Conlen, Nicole Longhi, Andrea Parker, Jessica Parker (Bryan Nancarrow) and Tori Hill; nephews Robbie (Sadie) Longhi, Lincoln Parker, and Christopher Parker; great-nieces and nephews Manelle and Riley Conlen, Raegen Parker, and Arianna Longhi; several aunts and uncles. Al was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy; brothers Clark, Jimmy and Paul; and sister Janie.
Margaret and Richard offer a special thanks to their family, friends and co-workers who provided continuous love and support. The family wishes to express thanks and gratitude to the many care-givers of Lake Superior Hospice Association. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Marc Himes and Gerald Napier who compassionately cared for Al for the past 24 years. Thank you to all of the doctors, nurses and staff of Marquette General Hospital-Duke Life Point who tirelessly cared for Al many times over the years, most recently this past week and in August of 2012. Thank you to the ICU, 7th and 8th floor staff for exceptional care during his hospital stays.
